Me- No thanks, it's a Chromebook.
"But it's free."

"Sir if you don't mind waiting a few minutes, we can install rubella on you."
My perception of mainstream anti-virus software. Not that an anti-malware scanner isn't useful, just that Best Buy generally recommends Norton/McAfee, and I'd rather piss fire for two days than have that on my PC.

My laptop came with Norton installed and I went ahead and removed it. I swear I got more Norton popups than I would've gotten for porn with a virus.
Windows defender is on now but is there any (free) antivirus/malware scanners that ya'll would recommend?

Defender coupled with MBAM should be all you need.

Yeah I know....all I wanted to do is get in there grab the box, pay and go. But no...I had to wait for a salesperson, who had to check to see if it was in stock, then go find it. I would have bought from Amazon or something but I got impatient, and it was a good price.

what nibbles said! I do tech support and use malware bytes all the time. Free norton is annoying.

That's how it was when I bought my Xbox.
"Sorry, we don't have any in the front, let me check in the back for one" ...ugh okay.
"Would you like to buy the extended Best-Buy warranty for $50?" No, Microsoft already has a year long one on the system.
"What about an extended warranty on the extra controller?" NO JUST LET ME LEEEAAVVVEE. I'm already spending $400+ dollars!

We are trying to get these into the school district I do IT for. I like the idea of them for where we are trying to pilot them, which is the HS library where they do a lot of google docs work. I'm looking forward to getting one in to test out and get working with our print server. Have you used them before and if so thoughts?

My school is trying to move that way as well. I am a Google Docs trainer for my district (I'm not a certified Google Educator). We just got a cart full of Chromebooks for my students to try out for a bit. So far so good, they are already trained on Drive but I think it will be a tough transition for folks that don't use Google Apps everyday.

Ha! A kindred spirit.
We have many Chromebooks in our district. If I had to guess, I'd say over a thousand (I need our inventory software to get an exact count, and I am not doing that right now). The Samsung ones are flimsy, to the point where the only people allowed to get them in and out of the carts are the teachers. Even then, we're shipping them back in pairs like a crazy Noah on a weekly basis. It hasn't been figured out yet how to get them to print on the print server (cough hack weeze stomp foot), but the general plan was to eliminate extraneous paper usage anyways, so...
If all you need is the internet, docs, email, and the ability to lock them down tight, Chromebooks are good. They don't make good gravity testers, or baseball bats. Also, for some reason their carts tend to be the focus of some students' anger (god I have stories). I'd definitely test one to its limits.

Am I the only one who remembers when Dell was putting goddamned Gator on their computers pre-shipment?
I swear I still get shivers when I deal with any Dell towers.

Nice! Yea Google Apps seems pretty simple to me but I definitely see people struggle with using it. It's typically the older crowd that have a hard time adapting to technology as is. Not that there is anything wrong with that, if you didn't grow up around technology it is a tough thing to pick up when you're older

Holy Crap! That is a fair amount. Good to know about the Samsung's. We purchased an HP to test before we do the pilot.
Oh god our carts with regular laptops get thrashed as is, I couldn't imagine flimsy chromebooks.
As far as printing (this was hearsay from another Tech I work with) but their may be a plug in for a windows print server that will allow them printing capabilities, but I haven't had a chance to try it. However, I downloaded chromium and installed it in a VM and managed to get that to print, but you don't want to know how to get that working haha.
Hahaha gravity testers....well as long as the keys pop off easily the students will enjoy them. One kid took the time to swap over 20 keys and reordered the numbpad. He rearranged it going 1-3, 4-6, 1-9 descending. I didn't even notice it at first. Little shits

The stories that could be told. We have Lenovo laptops, and those are tanks. The only thing they can do is remove keys and mouse tracker nubs. My all time favorite was the kid I call The Alphabetizer. He did just that; alphabetized the keyboard.
Had another kid make a sentence using repeating letters. The strangest part was that we never found where he got the letters from that he had to repeat. If he bought them from online, that's some determination.
I had heard of a printing plugin, but was told that it didn't work. I don't have the access to try it on our print server. I suspect that this issue will be forced soon enough.

hahaha hey we have Lenovo's too! We had one kid put his thumb through the screen but other than keyboard stuff that was it. Hahaha the alphabetizer, that's awesome. I also had a case of a duplicate key and no idea where it came from. Some computer is missing a "Q".
Hmm interesting. I'll have to do some reading about it. It's amazing how much we still rely on printing
